Number Crunching the Census

e the statisticians and boffins at the Office for National Statistics released the first results from the 2021 census. 

Here are some of the numbers in relation to Wales.

Wales’ total area is 20,779 km2 (8,023 sq. mi)

The overall population in Wales recorded from the ‘21 census is 3,107,500, a rise of 44,000 (1.4%) from 3,063,456 at the time of the 2011 census.  The battle of the sexes shows that were 1,586,600 women (51.1%) and 1,521,000 men (48.9%).

They say age is just a number and the age group 65 years and over shows that there was an increase in this proportion of the population to 21.3% compared with 18.4% in 2011.

Wales recorded 1,347,100 households with at least one occupant, a rise of 44,400 from 1,302,676 households at the time of 2011 census.

So, what about Swansea? Its total area is 380 km2 (150 sq. mi) the population was recorded as 238,500 a drop of (-0.2%) from 239,023 at the previous count.

The Age Structure within Swansea – this figure looks at 3 age groups – Under 15 years (16.0%), 15 to 64 years (63.5%) and 65 years and over (20.5%).  Swansea doesn’t follow the norm with the rest of Wales

Swansea’s Population Density (the number of people living within an area per square kilometre) The 2021 Census records 632, a drop of (-0.2%) from 2011 census.

The number of households within the Swansea Local Authority in 2021 was recorded as 105,000 a rise of (1.5%) from 103,497 previously.

The next lot of figures will be released by the ONS at the end of the year and early next year.
