Ernest Kirkpatrick-Crockett was born Ernest Crockett in 1882 at Taunton, Somerset. He was the son of William Marwell Crockett and Louisa Greed, who were married in 1855 at the Parish Church of Wilton, Somerset.

Early Life and Census Records

1891 Census

At the time of the 1891 Census, the Crockett family were residing at 73 East Reach, Taunton. William Crockett (40), born in Liverpool, was employed as a photographer, while his wife Louisa (34), born in Somerset, managed the household. Their children included William (17), a draper’s clerk; Louisa A. (14); Helen H. (10); Ernest (9); Maxwell (7); Frederick C. (6); Agnes B. (5); Mary (3); and Winifred M. (1), with the younger children attending school.

1901 Census

The next census in which Ernest appears is the 1901 Census, when, aged 19, he was serving as an Ordinary Seaman and recorded as a crew member of HMS Victorious, which was then in port at Malta.

1911 Census

By the time of the 1911 Census, Ernest, aged 29, had advanced to the rank of Gunner and was serving aboard HMS Indomitable, a first-class armoured cruiser, docked at HM Dockyard, Chatham, Kent.



Marriage and Naval Advancement

In 1919, Ernest married Leila Bootiman at South Shields, County Durham, and it was at this point that he first adopted the surname Kirkpatrick-Crockett.

In 1920, he was awarded a certificate confirming his attainment of the rank of Lieutenant.

1921 Census

The 1921 Census records Ernest Kirkpatrick-Crockett (39) as a Third Mate and Lieutenant, employed by the Anglo-American Oil Company Ltd., and serving aboard the steamship SS Duke of Connaught, which was docked at Barrow-in-Furness, Lancashire.



1939 Register and Civil Defence Work

1939 Register 

At the time of the 1939 Register, the Kirkpatrick-Crockett family were residing at 26 Kings Road, Mumbles. Ernest was recorded as a Lieutenant-Commander, a Master Mariner, and as serving with the South Wales Sea Fisheries Assistant Committee. His wife Leila undertook domestic duties and also served as an ARP Warden. Their daughter Joan was seeking employment and under training for ARP duties, while Mary was still attending school.

Second World War Service

During the Second World War, Ernest Kirkpatrick-Crockett served as a Lieutenant-Commander, Royal Navy, at H.M.S. Lucifer, the Royal Navy shore establishment and naval base located at Swansea. In this role he undertook senior administrative and supervisory duties connected with naval personnel, port activity, and maritime coordination along the South Wales coast.

His funeral was held at Arnos Vale Crematorium, Bristol, and his name is commemorated on a memorial. His death was reported in the Herald of Wales on 7th  April 1945.
