Torquay


Torquay, Devon, the seaside town located in the South Devon.  At the beginning pf the 19th century, that Torquay, developed into a fashionable seaside resort.  Initially it was visited of those served with the Royal Navy during the Napoleonic Wars, as ships were anchored in the bay.

Crime writer, Agatha Christie was born and lived here during her younger years. 

Located in Torquay town is the Torquay Cemetery, also known as Barton Road Cemetery.  First opened 1852.  Since 2002 the cemetery has been listed as Grade II.

There are 136 First World War burials.  One of those burials is the grave of Lieutenant Robert Coleman. 

The following newspaper article published on 4th February 1916, The Cambria Daily Leader. What a sad story and we cannot imagine the situation which lead to Coleman’s death.

The 1901 Census shows that 18-year-old Signalman Coleman, based at Royal Naval Barracks, Devonport.  One of the other crew members was James Bond!

George Mardsen Waterhouse
Also buried at the cemetery, is the former New Zealand Prime Minister, George Mardsen Waterhouse.  Serving for a term 1872-1873.
