Following on from the First World War memorial at St. Marys church, Pennard, this blog will look at those that are commemorated on the Second World War memorial.
John Arthur Ashley
Leading Aircraftman John Arthur Ashley served with Royal Air
Force. Died from an air accident, 2nd
February 1941, when his aircraft, Magister I, spun into the ground off a
turn during a dual instrument training flight at RAF Meir, Staffordshire. Aged 20. Commemorated at Pontypridd Crematorium. Son of Horace Arthur and Ada Mabel Ashely, of
Bishopston.

1911 Census, Horace Arthur Ashley aged 28 was residing at 36 Highbridge Road, Wylde Green, Sutton Coalfield with his parents, Israel, 64 and Sarah Jane, 62. Horace’s occupation is listed as Chartered Accountants Clerk.

Meanwhile at the same time, Ada Mabel Sadler, aged 24, was residing at 17 Beakes Road, Smethwick with her widowed mother, Sophia Sadler, 57. Ada’s occupation is listed as Shop Keeper Stationer and Toy.

Horace Arthur Ahsley and Ada Mabel Sadler were married 1915 at Tamworth, Staffordshire.
Five years later, 1920, John Arthur, was born at Wolverhampton. He would be their only child.
At the time of the 1921 Census, Mabel Ada, 36 and John
Arthur, 11 months, are boarding at 38 Boulevard, Weston Super Mare.

1928, Hoarce A. and Mabel A, along with Sophia Sadler are living
at 5 Norman Road, Whitchurch. 1937, they have moved to Swansea and residing at
3 New Villas, Ffynone.
By the time of the 1939 Register, the family at Ceres,
Kittle. Also listed is John, 19.

William Frederick Howard
Trooper William Frederick Howard served with Royal Armoured
Corps, 8th King’s Royal Irish Hussars. Killed in Action on 26th August 1942,
aged 21. Buried at Benghazi War
Cemetery, Libya. Son of John Webber Howard
and Elsie May Howard, of Sketty.
Devon born John Webber, 35, at the time of the 1911 Census, was
residing at 24 Nicholl Street, Swansea, with his widowed mother, Frances Maria,
68. John’s occupation is listed as
Elementary School Teacher. John, himself, served with new established Royal Air
Force, 1918.

At the same time 1911, Elsie, who was known as Lizzie Williams was employed as a servant at Evan Morgan household, Cefn Road, Bonymaen.

John W. and Elsie married at Holy Trinity, Swansea on 9th August 1915. John, 39, was a Schoolmaster and living at 24 Nicholl Street whilst Elsie, 23, was residing at Railway Hotel, High Street.

By the time of the 1921 Census, John and Elsie are residing at 10 Nicholl Street. Present on Census night are their children, Mollie F. S., 4; John W., 3 and William F., 7 months. Also present is John’s mother, Frances M., 79 and a servant, Orby Bellamy, 19. John is employed by Swansea Borough Council Education Authority as an Elementary School Teacher.

By the time of the 1939 Register, the family minis William F. are residing at 47 Malvern Terrace.
John died during 1943, aged 55. The Index of Wills and Administrations that they
were living at Brantwood, Southgate, Pennard.
Hubert Jones
Corporal Hubert Jones served with the Royal Engineers and No.
1 Commando. Killed in Action, on 31st January 1945, aged 25. Buried at Taukkyan War Cemetery,
Myanmar. Son of Benjamin Hubert and
Gladys Jones, of Bishopston.
1911 Census, Pennard born Benjamin Hubert Jones, aged 19,
was residing with his parents, Abraham, 44, and Mary Jones, 47, at their farm,
Great Kittle Farm, Bishopston.

Meanwhile at the same time 1911, Ilston born Gladys Jones, 17, was a dairy servant at William Jones farm.

Benjamin and Gladys both Jones were married, during 1915.
Hubert Jones was born, 1919.
At the time of the 1921 Census, Hubert Jones, 1, along with his
mother Gladys, 27 and brother, Glyn, 5 is residing at his uncles, John Jones,
Sandy Lane. Also present are visitors, George Bayliss, 31; Prudence, 28 and
1-year old Geoffrey.

By the time of the 1939 Register, Benjamin and Gladys Jones along with their children are still living at Great Kittle Farm. However not present is Hubert Jones.

David Maurice Glyn Lewis
Second Radio Officer David Maurice Glyn Lewis, aged 21, served
on board S.S. Amakua (Liverpool), Merchant, when it was sunk on 25th
August 1942, by U-558 90 miles southeast of Port Morant, Jamaica with
the loss of 13 crew. Commemorated on the Tower Hill Memorial, London. Son of
John Emlyn and Ethel May Lewis, of Swansea.

John Emlyn Lewis and Ethel May Webb were married during 1913
at Pembroke.
At the time of the 1921 Census, Pontardawe born John E., 38,
Wholesaler Draper and Pembroke Dock born Ethel M., 40 were residing at 9 Eden Avenue,
Swansea. Also present are their
children, John Cecil, 7; Eira Marguerite, 2 and David Maurice Glyn, 3
months. also present are two servants,
Gwen James, 20 and Nellie Kathleen Moss, 20.

By the time of the 1939 Register John and Ethel have moved to Parkmill, Gower. Also present on the register is David M. G., who is employed as a Draper’s Apprentice and his sister, Margery.
