Military Service and Death
Ieuan served as a Flying Officer with the Royal
Air Force Volunteer Reserve, attached to 355 Squadron RAF.
In May 1945, No. 355 Squadron was operating under South
East Asia Command, based at RAF Salbani, India, and was equipped
with Consolidated Liberator B.VI long-range bombers. Although the war in
Europe had ended earlier that month, operations against Japan were still
ongoing, and the squadron remained heavily engaged in combat missions over
the Bay of Bengal and Andaman Sea.
The squadron specialised in long-range maritime strike
operations, including attacks on enemy shipping, harbours, and port
installations, as well as mine-laying missions designed to disrupt Japanese
supply routes. The Andaman Islands, including Port Blair and Chatham
Island, were heavily defended Japanese bases and frequent targets for
Allied air attack. Despite the late stage of the war, anti-aircraft defences
remained active and dangerous, and aircrews faced significant risks from flak,
tropical weather, long flight durations, and navigation over open sea.
On 17th May 1945, Flying Officer Ieuan Anthony
Morgan was serving as an Air Bomber in a crew of eleven
aboard a Liberator B.VI detailed to carry out a raid on enemy
shipping and port facilities at Port Blair, Chatham Island, off the South
Andaman Islands. During the attack, the aircraft was shot down by
anti-aircraft fire, and Ieuan was killed in action, reflecting the
continuing hazards faced by RAF aircrews in the Far East up to the final months
of the war.
