The M.V. Silverpine was a 5,066‑ton British freighter owned by the Silver Line (S. & J. Thompson) of London. On 5th December 1940, while sailing in the North Atlantic more than 300 miles west of Ireland, the vessel was attacked by the Italian submarine Argo. Torpedoes fired by the submarine struck the Silverpine with devastating force, causing the ship to sink rapidly.

Of the crew on board, thirty‑five men lost their lives, including Third Officer John Anstice Budd. Only nineteen survivors were rescued and later landed at Londonderry.

The sinking occurred during a period of intense Axis submarine activity in the North Atlantic, when both German and Italian submarines targeted Allied merchant shipping in an effort to disrupt vital supply lines. The loss of the Silverpine and so many of her crew stands as a stark reminder of the dangers faced daily by Merchant Navy personnel during the Second World War.
