Third Officer John Anstice Budd – Merchant Navy, M.V. Silverpine
Early Life and Family Background
John Anstice Budd was born in 1913 in Edmonton,
England, the son of Archibald William Budd and Florence Eva Coles.
His father died in 1920, leaving Florence to raise their young family.
No census entries or 1939 Register records have been located
for John, suggesting that he may have been at sea from an early age or living
in circumstances not captured by the surviving records.
Service in the Merchant Navy
John pursued a career with the Merchant Navy, rising
to the rank of Third Officer, a responsible position involving
navigation, watch‑keeping, and the safe management of the ship and crew. At the
time of his death, his home address was recorded as Heatherdale, Graigola
Road, Glais, Swansea, indicating that he had established his life in South
Wales.

Of the crew on board, thirty‑five men lost their lives,
including Third Officer John Anstice Budd. Only nineteen survivors
were rescued and later landed at Londonderry.
The sinking occurred during a period of intense Axis
submarine activity in the North Atlantic, when both German and Italian
submarines targeted Allied merchant shipping in an effort to disrupt vital
supply lines. The loss of the Silverpine and so many of her crew stands
as a stark reminder of the dangers faced daily by Merchant Navy personnel
during the Second World War.
