Early Life
Samuel Norman Batson Haddow was born in 1922 in
Glasgow, Scotland. He was the son of Hugh Haddow and Margaret C. B.
Haddow.

The S.S. British Monarch
British Monarch was a 5,661‑ton cargo steamer,
completed in 1923 by Napier & Miller of Old Kilpatrick (Yard
No. 236) for the Monarch S.S. Co. (Raeburn & Verel) of Glasgow.
On 19th June 1940, while on passage from Bougie
to Glasgow with a cargo of iron ore, British Monarch was torpedoed
and sunk by the German submarine U‑48. All 40 members of her crew
were lost.
Loss of Apprentice Haddow
Samuel was among those who perished when the British
Monarch was sunk. He was just eighteen years old, one of many young
Merchant Navy apprentices who gave their lives in the early years of the war.
