Gordon Pye
Early Life and Family Background
Gordon Pye was born in 1925 in Totnes, Devon, the son of Ernest Leggett Pye and Barbara Jane Nowell. During his childhood the family later moved to South Wales, and at the outbreak of the Second World War they were living at 166 Pentregethin Road, Swansea, a home they maintained during the difficult wartime years.
Service in the Merchant Navy
During the Second World War, Gordon served with the Merchant Navy, where he was employed as a Cook. Though often overlooked, this role was essential aboard ship, ensuring the crew were sustained during long and hazardous voyages. Merchant seafarers faced constant danger from enemy submarines, mines, and air attack, and Gordon’s service placed him among the thousands whose work kept Britain’s wartime supply lines functioning.
Later Life and Death
In the years following the war, Gordon married Barbara Jane, and by 1965 the couple were living at 8 Clare Street, Manselton, where they became part of the local community. Gordon died in 1984, aged 58, and was laid to rest at Morriston Cemetery, Swansea. His life reflects the quiet but enduring contribution of many Merchant Navy men whose wartime experiences shaped the decades that followed.
