On 31 May 1926, the South Wales Daily Post published a remarkable story titled “Port Eynon’s Strange Visitor.” The article was accompanied by a photograph showing a group of villagers gathered on Port Eynon beach, standing around the body of a whale that had come ashore — an extraordinary event for the quiet Gower coastline.

“On Sunday morning, a whale came ashore at Port Eynon. The creature was officially measured at 14 feet 7 inches long and was estimated to weigh around one and a half tons. Shortly after being brought ashore, it was put down by P.C. Fleetwood, who dispatched it with three accurately aimed shots.”
