Port Eynon’s Strange Visitor — 1926

A Century‑Old Headline

South Wales Daily Post

On 31 May 1926, the South Wales Daily Post published a remarkable story titled “Port Eynon’s Strange Visitor.” The article was accompanied by a photograph showing a group of villagers gathered on Port Eynon beach, standing around the body of a whale that had come ashore — an extraordinary event for the quiet Gower coastline.

The Newspaper Account

“On Sunday morning, a whale came ashore at Port Eynon. The creature was officially measured at 14 feet 7 inches long and was estimated to weigh around one and a half tons. Shortly after being brought ashore, it was put down by P.C. Fleetwood, who dispatched it with three accurately aimed shots.”

Modern Restoration and Mystery

With today’s technology, the original photograph can be enhanced and clarified far beyond what was possible in 1926. Yet one question remains — who were the people pictured?
