Ronald Noel Davies – Royal Air Force
Corporal Ronald Noel Davies – Royal Air Force
Early Life
Ronald Noel Davies was born in 1909 at Birchgrove, Swansea. Records of his early life are limited, and much of his childhood and youth remain unrecorded, a not‑uncommon circumstance for working families in the early twentieth century. What is known is that he later entered Royal Air Force service, joining the generation whose lives were reshaped by the global conflict of the 1940s.
Service with the Royal Air Force
Richard served in the Royal Air Force, attaining the rank of Corporal. During the Far East campaign he was stationed at Kallang, Singapore, one of the principal RAF airfields defending the colony during the Japanese advance of late 1941 and early 1942. As the situation deteriorated and the defence of Singapore collapsed, RAF personnel were drawn into the chaotic and dangerous evacuation efforts across the region.

On 14 February 1942, amid the final days of the fall of Singapore, Corporal Ronald Noel Davies was presumed to have been killed during the evacuation of Singapore and Sumatra. Many RAF personnel attempting to escape were lost at sea or killed during attacks on evacuation vessels, and in numerous cases no trace of the missing was ever recovered. Richard’s fate remains among those tragic wartime uncertainties.
Commemoration
With no known grave, Ronald is commemorated on the Singapore Memorial, Singapore, which honours airmen of the Commonwealth who died in the Far East campaign and have no known resting place. His name stands among those who served in one of the most desperate theatres of the war, far from home and under overwhelming odds.
