Commonwealth War Graves Commission - Appeal for Relatives - David Llewellyn Williams

 

The third of the appeals made by the Commission is for Gunner David Llewellyn Williams, who served with the Royal Field Artillery, 22nd Battery, 48th Reserve Brigade.  Died 12th February 1919, aged 19 years.  David was the son of Daniel L. and Jane Williams, of Fforestfach.

St. Peter's burial register records that David was buried on the 15th and his home address was Mill End.  Today, sadly his name on the family headstone is wearing away.













David was born in 1900. His father, Daniel Llewelyn married Jane Clement, on Christmas Day, 1895 at St. Peters church.

1901 Census

By the time of the 1901 Census, Daniel and Jane were residing at Mile End Inn, Cockett.  Daniel was 23 and was employed as a crane man in the Steel Works.  Jane was 27 years old, and their three children were Elsie M., 4; David Ll., 1 and 2-month-old William C.

1911 Census

By the time of the 1911 Census, the family was residing at Station Road, Cockett.  Daniel now 33 is still employed as a crane driver.  Jane is 37 years old, and their children are Elsie Mary, 14; William Clements, 10; Gladys Helen, 7; Daniel Elwyn, 5 and Henry Ivor 3 years old. 

1921 Census

At the time of the 1921 Census, Daniel and Jane are residing at Way Road. Daniel is now 44 years old and is employed as an engine driver.  Jane is 47 years old.  Their children are William Clement, 20, who is employed as a crane driver; Gladys Elena, 18; Daniel Elwyn, 15, who is employed as a Greaser at the Steel Works; Henry Ivor, 13; Linnie Annie, 8 and 3-year-old Eirwen Jane. Jane died in 1925 followed in 1938 when Daniel died.

1939 Register

Elsie May, married Charles Haydn Godfrey in April 1923, at St. Pauls.  At the time of the 1939 Register, the couple are residing at 6 Parry’s Road, Cockett.  Charles is employed as a Wharf Labourer Heavy Work.  They have two children, one of who is still alive today, but the other is Jane Clement, who is a student.

1939 Register

William Clement, who married in October 1929 to Ethel Ivy Morgan, at St. Peters.  By the time of the 1939 Register they are residing at 8 Station Road.  William is employed as a Steelworks Engine Driver.  Their two children are still alive today.

Gladys married in 1927 to Sidney Walters. By the time of the 1939 Register they were residing at 1 Lewis Row.  Sidney is employed as a Colliery Hewer (Mine).  Their daughter is Rebecca J.

Daniel E. married in 1934 to Harriet W. Clement and by the time of the 1939 Register they are residing at 21 Iorwerth Street.  Daniel is employed as a Steel Gasman Steel Rolling Mill.  Their son, Ronald Clement is a student.

The following year, 1935, Henry married Sarah Dicks, and they were resident at the time of the 1939 Register at 6 Bryn Road.  Henry is employed as a Colliery Banksman Heavy Work Above.

Alas, at the time of the 1911 Census, David, was living with his parents, but he was living with his grandmother, Susannah Clements at Mile End.

Susannah was 75 years old. Also, present at the property on the census night were Susan, 45, and Richard John Clements, 39 who was employed as a Labourer at the Steel Works.
