Report Of The Death Of An American Citizen
As the formation turned, they encountered a thick cloud, where Robert was separated and flying in the wrong direction, in a north-westerly direction, Robert was flying NNE at the height of 10,000 ft.  now lost, Robert descended through a cloud, avoiding hitting the height ground of the Cwmafan valley, Robert found himself in a valley beyond surrounded by steep hills.  Coming out of the cloud above Trehebert, Robert pulled back on the stick but not allowing enough throttle, stalled the engine.  The doomed Hurricane struck the side of the valley, where the aircraft exploded sending debris over the road and open ground above

The alarm was raised in the town of Treherbert, where the local constable arrived at the scene, and saw there that there was no hope for the pilot.  All he could do was stand guard until the authorities arrived.
