Thomas Richards
Thomas Richards – Civilian Casualty of the Swansea Blitz
Early Life and Marriage
Thomas Richards was born in 1910. He later married Edith
Richards, and the couple made their home in the Cwmdu district of Swansea.
Home Life in Cwmdu
By February 1941, during the period of the Three Nights
Blitz on Swansea, Thomas and Edith were living at 29 Megan Street, Cwmdu.
This area, like much of western Swansea, suffered significant damage during the
sustained bombing raids.
Injury During the Three Nights Blitz – 20th February 1941
On 20th February 1941, during the second
night of the devastating attacks, Thomas was injured at his home in Megan
Street. The bombing that night caused widespread destruction across Cwmdu,
Manselton, and the surrounding neighbourhoods, with many houses collapsing or
catching fire as high‑explosive and incendiary bombs fell across the district.
Death at Penclawdd – 23rd February 1941
Despite being removed from the scene and receiving care,
Thomas’s injuries proved fatal. He died three days later, on 23rd
February 1941, at Glanmor Terrace, Penclawdd. His death reflects the
tragic pattern of the Swansea Blitz, in which many civilians succumbed to
injuries days after the initial explosions.
Burial at St Peter’s Church, Swansea
Thomas Richards was laid to rest at St Peter’s Church, Swansea, where his burial stands as a reminder of the heavy civilian toll inflicted on the city during the Three Nights Blitz
