OYSTERMOUTH COUNCIL PROCEEDINGS

South Wales Daily Post
As Reported in the South Wales Daily Post, June 1905
THE DEFERRED SEWERAGE QUESTION
In the early summer of 1905, when the affairs of Oystermouth were carried with the steady seriousness befitting a rising coastal parish, the Council assembled in its monthly sitting. The long‑discussed sewerage scheme—an issue that had drifted through previous sessions like an unresolved tide—was once again placed before the members. After deliberate exchange, the Council resolved that the matter should be deferred for six months, its complexities demanding further study before any decisive step could be taken.
STRENGTHENING THE DISTRICT’S FIRE DEFENCES
The Council did not allow the day to pass without firm action. With a mind to safeguarding the community, it was agreed that the district should be equipped with four 30‑foot fire‑escape ladders and ten Minimax fire‑extinguishing apparatuses—practical instruments of protection that would soon stand ready across Oystermouth, a quiet assurance against the sudden calamities that had too often visited coastal towns.
AMENITIES PROPOSED FOR BRACELET BAY
The Surveyor was instructed to prepare an estimate for the erection of lavatory accommodation for both sexes at Bracelet Bay, a recognition of the increasing numbers who now sought leisure along its rugged shoreline.
IMPROVEMENTS ADOPTED FOR ROTHERSLADE ROAD
Attention then turned to Rotherslade Road, where the sub‑committee’s recommendations for its paving and metalling were formally adopted, promising a more reliable and dignified passage for residents and visitors alike.
ANTICIPATED OFFER FROM MR. BENJAMIN EVANS
A final note of anticipation closed the proceedings. It was reported that Mr. Benjamin Evans, once able to resume his business affairs, was expected to place before the Council a definite offer concerning the widening of the entrance to the road—an improvement that, if realised, would reshape access to one of the district’s most frequented approaches.
