Commonwealth War Graves Commission - Appeal for Relatives - Robert Dennis

 

The Commonwealth War Grave Commission is searching for relatives of soldiers buried at Babell Calvinistic Methodist Chapelyard, Cwmbwrla.

The first appeal is for the relatives of Robert Dennis

Private Robert Dennis served with the Welsh Regiment, 14th Battalion.  Died on the 16th of March 1919, aged 31 years.

Robert was the son of Robert and Elizabeth Dennis, of 30 Gorse Road, Cwmbwrla.

Robert Dennis and Elizabeth Thomas were married in 1885.


During the 1891 Census, the Dennis family lived at 74 Pentregethin Road.

Robert, 33, is a Coal Collier.  Elizabeth, 28, and their children are James, 4; Robert, 3 and 1-year-old Hannah.

By the time of the 1901 Census, Robert was working away and was residing as a Boarder at 209 Bryusaddler, Llantrisant.

43-year-old Robert’s occupation currently is Coal Hewer

Elizabeth, 36 and the rest of the family are living at 30 Gorse Road. The children are James, 15; Robert, 13; Hannah, 12; Mary, 11; Roger, 9; Lizzie, 2 and 2-month-old Maggie.

The family is still living at the property a decade later at the time of the 1911 Census.

Robert, 53 is a Labourer (General), Elizabeth, 48.  The children are Robert, 17, Labourer (General); Hannah, 21; Mary, 19, Tinworker; Roger, 17, Tinworker; Lizzie, 11; Maggie, 9; Katie, 7 and 5-year-old Beatrice. The younger ones attend school.

Robert’s Attestation Papers haven’t survived, so it is unclear when he enlisted at the beginning of the war. However, Robert died due to sickness at Swansea on March 16, 1919.

So, what became of the other children?

James Dennis

At the time of the 1911 Census, James, who was 25 at the time, was married, and the family was living at 37 Caebricks Road.

James and Ellen Maria Shreeve were married in 1907.

James’ occupation is recorded as Wheeler of Tinplates Tin-Works. 

Their children are Glawdys Mary, 3, and 1-year-old Phyliss Gwenllian.

1939 Register

By the time of the 1939 Register, James who was employed as a Sewer – Miner, and Ellen who undertakes Unpaid Domestic Duties were living at 188 Middle Road, with their youngest son, James D. who is a student.

Glawdys at this time was married to Albert E. Cornwell, and was living at 100 Upper Brockley Road, Deptford, London.

Phyliss was also married to Joseph H. Statham and lived at 33 Gomer Road.

Hannah Dennis

The only information regarding Hannah is that she possibly married Thomas Thomas in 1911

Mary Dennis

Mary married Clifford J. Richards in 1915

At the time of the 1939 Register, the couple along with their children lived at 28 Gorse Road.

Roger Dennis

In 1922 Roger married Florence Llewellyn and by the time of the 1939 Register, the couple was living at 22 Powys Avenue

There is limited information on both Lizzie and Maggie Dennis

Katie Dennis

In 1929 Katie married Glyn J. Morgan and by the time of the 1939 Register they were living at Linda House, Fern Street.

In 1938 Beatrice married Thomas Hughes and by the time of the 1939 Register they were living at 155 Gors Avenue

Currently, Robert Dennis and the other soldiers that are buried at Babell Calvinistic Methodist Chapelyard are commemorated at Western Cemetery, Cardiff.
