Commonwealth War Graves Commission - Appeal for Relatives - William Jacob

 

The Commonwealth War Grave Commission is searching for relatives of soldiers buried at Babell Calvinistic Methodist Chapelyard, Cwmbwrla.

The third appeal is for the relatives of W. Jacob

Sapper W. Jacob served with the Royal Engineers Inland Water Transport and died on the 8th of June 1918 aged 37 years.  Husband of Alice Maud Jacob, of 40 Shelley Crescent, Swansea.

William Jacob was born in 1879; he was the son of Thomas and Ann Jacobs.


Thomas Jacob, who was born at Haverfordwest, Pembrokeshire married Ann Alban in 1873.

At the time of the 1881 Census, Thomas and Ann lived at 12 Pentre Mawr.  Thomas was 31 and employed as a Cooper Man.  Ann, 29.  Their children were Elizabeth Ann, 6; Catherine, 5; Martha, 3 and 1-year-old William.

By the time of the 1891 Census, Thomas is now 41, and living at 28 Vivian Street, with his family.  His occupation is recorded as Smelter in Silver Works.  Ann is 38.  Their children are Catherine, 15 who is employed in the Tin Works.  Martha, 13; William, 6; Elizabeth A., 6; Thomas, 6; Mary, 1 and 6-months Christina.

Thomas at the time of the 1901 Census is a boarder residing at 29 Pentre Estyll.  He is a Copper Smelter.

Meanwhile, at the same time, Anne, 49 is residing at 410 Pentregethin Road, with the rest of the family.  William isn’t recorded on the census.

William married in 1904 to Alice Maud Berry at St. Marks church.

William, 32, is next recorded on the 1911 Census, living at 40 Shelley Crescent, with his wife Alice Maud, 27, with their 6-year-old daughter Winifred.  William’s occupation is Stationary Boiler.  They were to have further children, Sidney born in 1911 and Annie born in 1915.

William died at 3rd Western General Hospital, Cardiff.

Following his death, Alice remarried in 1921, to William Davies.

At the time of the 1939 Register, Alice is living at 40 Shelley Crescent.
