Thomas Lawton was born in 1879 in Market Drayton,
Shropshire. Few personal details are known about his early life or family
background, but his military records confirm his service during the First
World War.
The Royal Field Artillery played a vital role
throughout the conflict, operating the medium-calibre guns and howitzers that
supported the infantry on the front lines. As part of the 8th Divisional
Ammunition Column, Thomas would have been responsible for transporting
shells and munitions to forward positions under dangerous conditions — a task
requiring both endurance and courage.
Gunner Thomas Lawton died on 4th August
1919, several months after the end of the war, possibly as a result of
illness or injuries sustained during his service. He was laid to rest in Oystermouth
Cemetery, Swansea.
Although little is known about his life, his grave stands as
a testament to his service and to the many men whose contributions, though
often unrecorded, were essential to the Allied effort during the Great War.
