Joel Jacobs, who was of the Jewish faith, was born in 1895 in Swansea, the son of Michael Jacobs and Selina Pearl Goodman, who were married in 1894 at Swansea.

1901 Census

At the time of the 1901 Census, the Jacobs family were residing at 53 Walter Road, Swansea. Michael (31) was a house furnisher, and his wife, Pearlie (27), managed the home. Their only child at that time was Joel, aged six. Also present in the household were Michael’s brother, Graham Jacobs (26); brother-in-law Albert Victor Goodman; nephew Henry Barnett (7); and a servant, Alice Vigers (24).

1911 Census

By the 1911 Census, the family were still living at 53 Walter Road. Michael (41) was described as a furniture dealer, and Selina Pearl was 38. Their children were Joel (15) and Louis George (8), both attending school. Also residing with the family were a nephew, Jacob Joel Manchester (17), and two servants, Ida Poole (19) and Alice Vaughan (24).

Military Service

During the First World War, Joel was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the Alexandra’s Princess of Wales’s Own (Yorkshire Regiment), 1/5th Battalion, Territorial Force.

Death and Commemoration

Joel was killed in action on 20th July 1916, having been struck by a fragment of a shell during operations in Belgium. He is buried at La Laiterie Military Cemetery, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium.
