Family Background and Early Life
John Harry Browning was born in 1884 at Devonport, Devon,
the son of John Browning and Esther Meredyth, who were married in
1879 at East Stonehouse, Devon.

At the time of the 1891 Census, the Browning family were living at 17 West Parade, Hull, Yorkshire. John Browning was absent from the household, being away on service with the Royal Navy. Esther, aged 36, was caring for their children: Harry (7), Jessey (2), and Ernest (7 months).

By the 1901 Census, the family had relocated to 11 Land Layer Terrace, Exeter, Devon. John Browning remained absent due to naval service. Esther, now aged 44, was recorded with her children Harry (18), employed as a cycle apprentice, and Jessey (12).
Marriage and Occupation

In 1909, John Harry Browning married Harriet Pratt at South Shields, County Durham. Two years later, the 1911 Census records the couple residing at 1 Lytton Street, South Shields. John, aged 29, was employed as a Merchant Service sailor, while Harriet was 21.
Military Service
John Harry Browning later joined the Royal Naval Reserve,
serving with the Royal Navy Depot at Port Said, Egypt. The Port Said
depot was a strategically vital naval base guarding the northern entrance to
the Suez Canal, responsible for coaling, repair, medical support, and the
administration of reservists and transit crews operating throughout the Mediterranean,
Red Sea, and Eastern theatres during the First World War.
Personnel attached to Port Said were frequently assigned to
patrol vessels, transports, and auxiliary ships, or employed in harbour defence
and logistical duties supporting operations in Gallipoli, Salonika, and the
Middle East.
John served in the rank of Seaman.

According to the British Army and Navy Birth, Marriage and Death Records, Seaman John Harry Browning died on 30th April 1916. He was buried at sea, a common practice for naval deaths occurring while on active service.

compiled its records, John’s mother, Esther Browning, was living at 24
Penygraig Road, Mount Pleasant, Swansea.
