Ironwy Jones

The fourth and final son of Thomas Jones, Ironwy Jones, in the series of blogs about the Joneses.

Ironwy was older brother of the Leifchild, was born 5th November 1857, Morriston.

Unlike his brothers, there is no surviving photograph of him, and have to rely on the various Censuses returns to paint a photo of him.

The first census dated 1861, Ironwy, then aged 3-year-old, having been born at Morriston, is living at 44 Albert Street, Regents Park, London.  His father, Thomas Jones is listed as an Independent Ministry of Albany Church.

1867, his mother Jane died.  The family returned back to Swansea.

1871 census, the family are now living at 2 Heathfield, Swansea.  Ironwy, then aged 13 years old, is listed as a Scholar. Ironwy’s birthplace is listed as Llangyfelach.  His father, Thomas, himself aged 51 years old is listed as an Independent Minister for the Congregational Church.  Also listed is Thomas’ second wife, Annie, aged 39 years old.

The last census, that records Ironwy is the 1881.  Ironwy now aged 23, is living with the family at 105 Walters Road.  His occupation is listed as Tin Plate Manufacturer.  His father, Thomas, aged 61, is listed as Congregational Minister, of the church next door to the house.

13th August 1886


The last that is heard of Ironwy, is an article published in The Cambrian, 13th August 1886.  The article is about the about his death.  The article also stats that Ironwy was seen swimming along with a pipe in his mouth and that he was of literary promise.



Ironwy was buried at Danygraig Cemetery, along with his brother and father.
