John Macdonald Etheridge
St. Pauls
The only seaman to be buried at St. Pauls is John Macdonald Etheridge, who died on 15th September 1943. John was the eldest of the war graves aged 66, and he was the Chief Officer of the S.S. Capito (Bristol)

Born in 1876 at Whitstable, John would only be recorded on three censuses, 1881, 1891 and 1921.









1881 Census

1881 Census, John is aged 4 years old, he is living at his parent’s home, 9 Oxford Street, Seasalter, Kent.

His father, Charles, aged 41 is a General Practitioner in Medicines M.R.O.S. Eng. L.S.A., Elizabeth, his wife, a decade younger, 31.  Their children are Mary E., 6; William B., 5; John M., 4; Archibald, 3 and 1-year-old Charlotte B. J. Also present are three servants, Edith Russell, 32; Mary Ellen Lapthorn, 20, and 22-year-old Margaret Pidduck.

1891 Census

A decade later, in 1891, the family moved to 97 Oxford Street, Ivy House.  The only changes to this census record are the additional child, 9-year-old Alan.  John, who is 14 is listed as a Cadet Medical Train College.   The sister-in-law, Amelia J. Arden, 33, is a Governess.  Also, a 15-year-old servant, Agnes Perkins.

1921 Census

By the time of the 1921 census, John, now 44 years old, is now married to Sarah Butcher.  They are bordering along with their son 2-year-old John, residing at 26 Castleland Street, Barry, the home of Hector A. Curle.

Sadly, John, at this time whose occupation is recorded as Mercantile Marine Officer, is out of employment.

1933 Electoral Register

There is a further reference to John in the 1933 Electoral Register, living at 52 Dock View Road, Barry.

UK, Merchant Seamen Deaths 1939-1953

South Wales Daily Post
The South Wales Daily Post, published on the 17th  of September 1943, published an article on his death.  According to the article, John had been a veteran of three wars, the Boer, First, and Second World Wars.  John had retired from the sea and his ship, which was the S.S. Capito,
