The only military burial of 1941 at Bethel was Milton Price Lewis, who died in March 1941.

Lance Sergeant Milton Price Lewis, who served with the Royal Artillery, 52 Field Regiment died on 14th March 1941, aged 23 years.

Milton was the younger son of Reuben and Elizabeth Lewis.

Reuben Lewis married Martha Elizabeth Jordan in 1914.








The 1911 Census, records that Reuben was residing at 7 Western Street, at the home of his uncle, Thomas Price.  Reuben, 19, was employed by his uncle as a Chimney Sweep.  Also present was his sister, Violet, 15.

Thomas Price, 36, Chimney Sweep was the head of the household, and his wife, Margaret, 43, didn’t have any children.  Their assistant, Albert Purichard, 18 was also present on Census night.

Meanwhile, Elizabeth Jordan was recorded at the time of the 1911 Census are residing with her widowed mother, Ann, 50 at 76b Penvillia Road, Brynhyfryd Street.

Ann who records her occupation as “Working Out”, whilst Elizabeth, 20, was a Domestic Servant.

Following their marriage, the couple residences at 107 Western Street at the time of the 1921 Census.  Reuben, 29, is still employed by his uncle as a Chimney Sweep, and Elizabeth, 30.

There is very little information regarding Milton’s military record.  Milton enlisted in 1939 and served with the Royal Artillery; it is only his death notices that are published in the newspaper.  In this notice, it states that he died at Colchester.

His body was returned home to Swansea and buried at Bethel.  His grave has a small Commonwealth War Grave Commissions memorial plaque situated at the foot of the grave.
