William Fifield

The Groesbeek Memorial commemorates over 1,000 men of the Commonwealth land forces who died during the campaign in north-west Europe between the time of crossing the Seine at the end of August 1944 to the end of the war in Europe and have no known graves.

One of those commemorated on the memorial is Private William Fifield, who served with the 10th Battalion, The Parachute Regiment. 

Initially, William enlisted with the General Service Corps before volunteering with the parachute regiment.

He undertook parachute training at RAF Ringway, between the 6th and 20th of December 1943, before he was posted to the “B” Company, 10th Battalion.





William was the son of Hector McDonald and Selby Fifield, of Cwmdu.  William was killed in action on the 19th of September 1944, aged 19.

1939 Register

At the time of the 1939 Register, William is recorded as living at Tregernydd Cottages, Swansea.  William’s occupation is listed as Tinworker.

Herald of Wales


The Herald of Wales, reported on the 14th of October 1944, that William was reported missing.
