Another case from the In From The Cold project, regarding another soldier who served the 14th Battalion, Welsh Regiment, is Henry Charles Tylor who has a military headstone.

Colour Serjeant Henry Charles Tylor died on the 24th of November 1914, aged 50. Tylor is buried at Kingston-upon-Thames Cemetery, Surrey.

Henry was born in Rotherhithe, Surrey in 1864, son of Mary Tylor, father unknown due to the information recorded on census records.






The first census that Henry was recorded on was in 1881.

The Tylor family are living at 10 Layard Road, Bermondsey, London.

Mary, 53 is widowed. The children that are living here are William, 27, a Book Collector and Unemployed (Seller); Kate, 24, a Gents Tie Maker (Hosier); Elizabeth, 19, also a Gents Tie Maker (Hosier) and Henry, 17, Clerk Jewellers.

March 31st 1901, Ireland, is where Henry and his family are living at the time of the census.

Henry, 37, and his wife Grace, 32 are living at Arbour Hill Military and Prison, Arran Quay, Dublin with their children, Henry, 6; Sidney, 4 and Colenbo, 1.

1911 census, Henry has returned to the UK with his family living at Armoury Hall, West End, Esher, Surrey.

Henry, 47, is a Colour Sergeant Inspector of the Territorial Forces 6th Battalion, East Surrey Regiment. Grace, 44.  At the time of the census, they had been married for 18 years.

The children are Grace Lilian, 22; Lilian Colenso, 11; Mary Esther, 8; George Patrick, 5 and Ellen Mary, 3.

Henry’s army records haven’t survived however, he served with the 14th Battalion, Welsh Regiment.

Sadly, from information from the In From The Cold website, Henry died from tuberculosis.  Henry was the first from the battalion, to die.
