At the time of his death, July 1914, John Pugh Davies, was one of the oldest residents of Sketty.

John was born in 1836 in Swansea.

1865, John married Lucy Rosser, at Sketty Independent Chapel.







At the time of the 1871 Census, the couple were living at Wimmerfield, Killay. John, 35, was a farmer of 70 acres.

Their two children at this time were Frances, 5, and Mary J., 2.

Also present at the farm were three farm servants, Ann Williams, 14; David Griffiths, 19 and Charles Lewis, 14.

Lucy died before the 1881 Census; she was 39.

At the time of the 1881 Census, John, 45 was widowed and he was still living at Wimmerfield, Killay, with his three daughters, Frances, 15; Mary Jane, 12, and Lucy, 9.

Also present at the farm was a Housekeeper, Eliza Bowen, 58 and two servants, Elizabeth Jones, 20, and Frederick Snow, 34.

A decade later, at the time of the 1891 Census, 54-year-old John, was still at Wimmerfield, with his three daughters, Frances, 24; Mary J., 22, and 20 year old Lucy.  The daughters were living by their own means.

Also present were two farm servants, Catherine A. Phillips, 13, and John Taylor, 25.

By the 1901 Census, John had moved to No. 2 Cross, Gower Road, and he was living on his own

So, what happened to the daughters?

1892, Frances, married at St. James church, John Taylor.  Frances’s address at the time of the marriage was Gam Street.  John’s occupation was a Labourer.

1896, Lucy, married at St. James church, Joseph Jones.  Lucy’s address at the time of the marriage was Westbury Street, Swansea.  Joseph’s occupation is recorded as Bookkeeper.

Joseph and Lucy at the time of the 1901 Census were living at 98 Oxford Street. Joseph was a Ironmongers Assistant.

Finally, 1897, Mary Jane married at St. James church to Henry Morgan Miles.  Mary’s address was White Street, and Henry’s occupation was Painter.

The couple by the time of the 1901 Census, had moved to Merthyr Tydfill, and liver at 13 Thomas Street.  Henry was a House Decorator

They were still living at 37 Bryntaf Aberfan, Merthyr Tydfill, at the time of the 1911 Census.

1911 Census

Henry, 45, was employed at the coal mine working as a Repairer Below. Mary was 40. Also present were two boarders, Henry Powell, 54, and William Huckson, 31.

However, the couple did return to Llanmadoc, Gower at the time of the 1939 Register.

The 1911 Census, John who is 78 is living alone at Cildeg House, Gower Road.  John occupation is recorded as Retired Farmer.

John was a member of Bethel Chapel, and where he buried.  The Cambrian Daily Leader reported his death.
