Thomas Jenkins - Bethel Cemetery
Thomas Jenkins, born in 1865, was the son of Thomas and Ellen Jenkins.
The Jenkins family at the time of the 1871 census were living
at 17 Tontine Street, Swansea.

Thomas, aged 36, was a labourer whilst Ellen was 35 years
old
Their children were Mary Ann, 13; John, 11; Nicholas Jno.,
9; Thomas, 6, and 3-year-old Daniel. All
the children were attended school.
The family had moved to 6 Tontine Street, by the time of the
1881 census.

Thomas, aged 45, is a General Labourer, whilst Ellen is 43
years old.
The eldest children have moved away, so, Thomas, now 16 is
the eldest child at home. His occupation
like his father is a General Labourer.
The other children present Daniel, 14; Nicholas J., 10, and
5-year-old Ezekial all attend school.
51-year-old Thomas was prisoned at Swansea Prison, for
7 days during 1886 for Brench of the Education Act.

Thomas the younger, married Phoebe Cawker in August 1888 at
St. John-juxta-Swansea church, Swansea.

Thomas, who was 22 at the time of the marriage, was living
at Tontine Street and his occupation at the time was Labourer. Phoebe, who was 19, resided at Rodney Street.
Thomas was unable to sign the certificate and marked it with
X.
By the time of the 1891 Census, the couple were living at 2
Vernon Street.
Thomas now aged 27 is a Labourer whilst Phoebe is 21. They have a 11-month-old daughter, Mary
Ellen.
It would be that Thomas is missing from the 1901 Census,
Phoebe, has moved to 102 Rodney Street.

Present at the property is Phoebe, 30, and her children,
Margaret, 7; Samuel, 3 and 5-months old Phoebe.
Also present is Margaret Cawker, 25 years old, who is Phoebe’s
sister. She is employed as Charwoman.
Thomas currently has enlisted and is serving with the army
at Boer War, South Africa.
Thomas is present on the 1911 Census.

The family are now living at 54 Rodney Street. Thomas, now 45, is employed as Labourer. Phoebe is 42.
Their children are Maggie, 17, who is employed as a Servant;
Samuel, 13 and Phoebe, 10 are attending school.
July 1914, Thomas, was prisoned at Swansea Prison for 7
days, for Drunkenness.

1915, Thomas enlisted and served with the Royal Engineers for the duration of the First World War.

Following the war, at the time of the 1921 Census, the Jenkins family were still living at 54 Rodney Street.

Thomas, 55, was employed as a General Labourer. Phoebe, 53, under the home duties.
Samuel, 23, who is also a General Labourer, and Pheobe, 20
is a Tailoress.

1933, Thomas Jenkins died, and his funeral announcements were published in The South Wales Evening Post. The article refers that he fought in both the Boer and First World Wars.
Thomas was buried at Bethel Cemetery.
