 The Importance of Art Whatever The Name!

This blog starts with the 1871 Census, the Shuttlewood family who were residing at Foss Street, St. Saviours, Dartmouth, Devon

1871 Census

James, 45, was a Tobacconist, his wife Sarah, 41. 

Their children were Henry, 11; Percy, 9; John, 8; William, 6 and 2-year-old Carlton.

Also present at the property on the night of the census, was 13-year-old visitor Fanny Buxton.

This blog will follow the son, Percy.

1881 census, Percy now aged 24 years is a boarder living the home of Francis S. and Sarah Matryn, 13 Chapel Street, Tavistock,

Percy’s occupation is recorded as News Correspondent (Reporter)

May 1891, The Cambria Daily Leader, has reported that Percy is attending the First Lighting of the Magnificent Interior of the Theatre Royal.

October 1890, Percy married at St. James Church, Florence Melville Robbins

At the time of the marriage, Percy was residing at Woodland Terrace, and his occupation was Journalist.

Florence was living at Christina Street, and her father comedian and Theatre Proprietor George Melville Robbins.

That same year at the time of the 1891 Census, the couple were living at 2 Bryn Road.

1891 Census

Percy, 29, whose occupation is recorded as Shorthand Writer.  Florence, who was only recorded on the census with her initials F. M. is 22 years old. 

Also present is a visitor C. A. Shuttlewood, 22-year-old.  This Percy’s brother Carlton.

1901 Census, the couple had two children, and they were living at 52 St. George Terrace.

Percy, 39, whose occupation is recorded as Journalist and Shorthand Writer. Florence is 32 years old.

The children are Percy, 9, and Jessie F. aged 4.  We will follow Percy shortly.

Also present is Alice M. Robins, 41, who is Florence’s sister.

The 1911 Census, the family have now moved to 14 Heathfield.

Percy, 49, is still a journalist.  Florence is 41 years old.

19-year-old Percy is also a journalist.  Jessie Florence, 14, and 9-year-old Lucy Violet attend school.

Present in the house at the time of the census is 50-year-old Alice Melville, sister-in-law and 13-year-old niece Mabel.

The Grange, Nicholaston is where the family have moved to by the time of the 1921 Census.  Percy, 60, who is a journalist Chief Reporter Official Shorthand Writer.

1921 Census

Florence Melville is 52 years old.  Their daughters are 25-year-old Jessie Florence and 19-year-old Lucy.  All the women undertake with the household duties.

Florence died in 1933.

Percy who was widowed at the time of the 1939 Register, he is still residing at the Grange with his daughters.

Percy died in 1940.

They were buried at St. Nicholas, Nicholaston.

The son, Percy, who was born in 1892.  At the time of the First World War, served as a Private with the King’s Royal Rifle Corps.

Percy changed his name to Malcolm Mackenzie and was a student at Swansea Art School.

Herald of Wales

Swansea Councillor W. A. Jenkins, who was a chairman at a special meeting of the Swansea Arts and Craft and Art Galleries Committee, reported that there were permanent loans of pictures and sculptures from Baron von der Heydt, the collector and friend of the ex-Kaiser.

Malcolm Meckenzie who was a close friend of Baron von der Heydt.   The Herald of Wales published a detailed article, February 1937, regarding the visit made by Baron von der Heydt.

Following the Second World War, Malcolm, was the founder secretary of the Empire Art Council, and they were in the process of exchanging pictures from one part of the Commonwealth to the other




Malcolm was based at Carlyle Studios, Chelsea.  It was here where Malcolm died, 1956.  His ashes were buried at his parent’s grave, at St. Nicholas, Nicholaston
