Early Life
Herbert William Scott was born in Manchester
in 1908, the son of William Stewart Scott and Maria Scott.

By the time of the 1911 Census, Herbert, aged 3, was living with his mother as a boarder in the household of Edward Clancey at 9 Pinder Street, Hulme, Manchester. Maria, then aged 29, was employed as a Shirt Maker, while Herbert was recorded simply as a young child of 3 years.
Marriage
No further records of Herbert appear until 1934,
when he married Lilian M. Thompson. The couple later settled in Swansea,
where Herbert established his home at 25 Grenfell Park Road.
Military Service
Herbert joined the Merchant Navy and served as
a cook on board the M.V. Hope Crown, one of many merchant
vessels vital to Britain’s wartime supply routes. Merchant seamen faced
constant danger from enemy submarines, aircraft, and mines throughout
the Second World War, and the role of the cook was essential to the
daily welfare and morale of the crew.

On 3rd March 1943, Herbert William Scott, aged 35, died at Hill House Isolation Hospital, Swansea. His service is recorded in the Merchant Seaman Deaths Register.
Burial
