Stanley Vernon Lloyd

Private Stanley Vernon Lloyd – General Service Corps

Early Life

Stanley Vernon Lloyd was born in 1926, the son of John Lloyd and Florence May Pipes, who had married in 1920.

Tragedy struck the family early when Stanley’s father, John Lloyd, died in March 1932. John himself had been a veteran of the First World War, serving with the Welch Regiment.

Military Service

During the Second World War, Stanley enlisted in the General Service Corps. Too young to appear in earlier official records, his name only emerges through his service and sacrifice at the war’s end.

Both John Lloyd and his son Stanley were laid to rest in the same grave at Danygraig Cemetery. Their names are inscribed together on the headstone, linking father and son across two world wars.

Legacy

Though only 18 years old when he died, Private Stanley Vernon Lloyd is remembered at Danygraig Cemetery, where his name stands beside that of his father, John Lloyd. Their shared headstone unites two generations of service—father and son—who both answered the call of duty in their country’s time of need.

Stanley’s short life and untimely death reflect the heavy cost of war on Swansea’s families, where even the youngest were not spared its toll. His story stands as a reminder of the sacrifices made not only by seasoned soldiers but also by those just beginning their adult lives, whose futures were cut short in the shadow of global conflict.
