John Evans
The 1941 Mystery

According to Welsh Guards records, several deaths were
recorded on 21st February 1941. Some were the result of men
killed in action, others from wounds or related causes. Among them was Lance
Corporal John Evans.
Very little is known about John. The Commonwealth War
Graves Commission provides the only surviving details: he held the rank of
Lance Corporal in the Welsh Guards and was the son of David and Margaret
Evans of Swansea. He died on 21 February, during what was the second
night of the Swansea Blitz, part of the devastating three-night bombing
campaign.
This raises an unresolved question: was John Evans one of
the Guardsmen lost to the war overseas, or could he have been a local victim
of the Blitz itself? Whatever the circumstances, he was laid to rest in Danygraig
Cemetery, his story entwined with both the service of the Welsh Guards and
the tragedy of Swansea’s darkest days.
