Death and Commemoration

S.S. Almeda Star
On 17th January 1941, Corporal Frank William Butler lost his life while travelling aboard the S.S. Almeda Star.

The Almeda Star was a British passenger and cargo vessel sailing unescorted in the North Atlantic when she was torpedoed by the German U-boat U-96 approximately 35 miles north of Rockall, while en route from the United Kingdom to Trinidad. The attack took place during one of the most dangerous phases of the Battle of the Atlantic, when Allied shipping was under constant threat from German submarines.

The torpedo caused catastrophic damage, and the vessel sank with the loss of all those on board. No survivors were recovered, and those who perished were recorded as missing, presumed drowned, a fate shared by many service personnel and civilians lost at sea during the war.
