Birth and Family Background

William Charles Webborn was born in 1890 at Mumbles, the son of Jesse Webborn and Mary Jane Elliott. In census records he appears variously as William or Charles, reflecting common inconsistencies in the recording of his name.

1891 Census

The 1891 Census records the family living at 9 Castleton Street, Oystermouth. Jesse Webborn (39) was employed as a general labourer, while his wife Mary Jane (26) managed the household.

Their children were Thomas J. (6) and Maria (5), both attending school; Elsie J. (3); and Charles (9 months).

1901 Census

By the time of the 1901 Census, the family had moved to 5 Stanley Street, Oystermouth. Jesse Webborn (49) was working as a gardener (not domestic), and Mary Jane (31) managed the home.

Their children were Maria (15), William (10), Philip (8), George (5), Elsie (1), and Sidney (7 months).

Later Life

In 1904, Mary Jane Webborn died, leaving Jesse Webborn a widower.

1911 Census

The 1911 Census records Charles Webborn (20) living as a boarder at 7 Horeb Street, Treorchy. His occupation was given as a coal miner (hewer).

Military Service

William Charles Webborn originally enlisted in the Royal Army Service Corps, but later transferred to serve as a Private with the Royal Dublin Fusiliers, 8th Battalion.

In August 1917, the 8th Battalion, Royal Dublin Fusiliers, was engaged in the Third Battle of Ypres (Passchendaele) as part of the 48th (South Midland) Division, operating in the Ypres Salient.

Death and Commemoration

It was during these operations that Private William Charles Webborn was killed in action on 11th August 1917.

He has no known grave, and his name is commemorated on the Menin Gate Memorial, Ypres, Belgium.
