Abraham Lyons

Tredegar, 1862, Abraham Lyons was born.

The Census of 1871, records Abraham Lyons, who is 9 years old living 13 Queen Street, Pawnbroker Shop, Tredegar.  The shop was run by 39-year-old Lewis Lyons and his wife 40-year-old Sarah Lyons.

Their eldest child was Joseph Samuel, who was 15 years old.  He was Lewis’ stepson.  He worked in the shop.  The other children were, Ellen, 11; Abraham, 9; Amelia, 7; Miriam, 5, and 2-year-old Jane.

Also present at the present was 17-year-old Patrick John Casey, who was a clerk, and 18-year-old Ann Jones, 12-year-old Gwenny Jones who were employed as servants.

A decade later at the time of the 1881 Census, the family were living at 91 Queen Street.

Abraham, who was 18-year-old, was employed as a Pawnbroker.

Employed by the family were 20-year-old Mary Goves, servant and Terence Maoney 18-year-old Pawnbroker Assistant Clerk.

52 Walter Road was the home where Abraham was living at the time of the 1901 Census.

Abraham, 29 years old, employed as a Pawnbroker and Jeweller, and his wife 28-year-old Augusta nee. Wilks.  They were married in 1891 in Middlesbrough.

Their children were Gladys Ella, 8; Lewis, 6; Claude, 5, and 3-year-old Dorothy. All the children were born in Swansea.  Also present at the property were Ennie Williams and Margaret Jones both 20-year-old servants.

Abraham, who is now 49 years old is Pawnbroker & Jeweller.  His wife, Augustus is 37 years old.

Their child Glayds, 18; Lewis, 16, employed as Coal Clerk Exporters.  Claude, 15; Dorothy, 13, and 1-year old Brenda Winifred.

Employed by the family are two servants 41-year-old Elizabeth McIndoor and 21-year-old Elizabeth Lewis.

Abraham home was still 52 Walter Road, however, the number present at the property during the census night was reduced.  Abraham, who is 59 years old, along with his wife, Augustus, 46 years.

The only child present is 11-year-old Brenda.  Hilda Bowers, 22-year-old servant is employed by the family.

Abraham obtained a business, H. Freedman & Sons, College Street and Waterloo Street.  The business was the principal of Braham Freedman.  Braham’s son, Lawrence Freedman, who in turn changed his name to Lawrence Langer.

Lawrence Langer was the author along with his wife, Armine Lawrence the play “The Pursuit of Happiness”, which was running at Vaudeville Theatre, London, 1934.

Abrham was a senior member of the local Hebrew congregation also he was a Freemason, whilst attending a meeting at the Indefatigable Lodge, he was taking ill. Sadly, without regaining consciousness Abraham died October 1933, aged 72.

Following his death, Abraham, was buried at the Jewish Cemetery, Mount Pleasant. The South Wales Daily Post reported his funeral
