Newspapers like to make a mistake!

This was the case in 1916 when the South Wales Daily Post published an article in December referring to Jewish Troops at Aldershot – Swansea Clergyman’s Import Post. The article was referring to Rev. E. M. Levy.

So, who was E. M. Levy?

Moses Ephraim Levy, who was born in 1892 in Russia was the eldest child of Abraham and Sarah Levy

At the time of the 1901 Census, the Levy family lived at 48 Carlton Terrace, Swansea.

Abraham, 31, who was employed as a Rag Merchant, Sara also 31 years old, and Moses, 9, were all born in Russia (Russian Subjects)

Leah Levy, the next child aged 7 years was born in Ystalyfera.

The younger children, Esther, 6 years old, Rachel, 4 years old, and 11-month-old William were all born in Swansea.

Also present at the property, was Isaac, 19, brother of Abraham, who was also born in Russia.  He is recorded as a Jewellery Dealer. Abraham Rapport, 22 years old, a Rag/Packer was a boarder, born in Rumania.

Employed by the family were two servants, 41-year-old Mary Davies and 15-year-old Elizabeth J. Fowler.

In 1907, Abraham and his family applied for a Naturalization Certificate.  Herbert John Gladstone MP was the Principal Secretary of State.

The Naturalization Certificate came about following the passing of the Naturalization Act, of 1870.  This Act was an act of Parliament that amended and consolidated enactments relating to British nationality.

In the 1911 Census, Abraham Levy and his family are living at Carmel Eaton Grove.  The family moved from Marine House, New Orchard Street when they lived there in 1907.

Abraham is now aged 41.  His occupation is recorded as a Marine Store Dealer.  Sarah is also 41.

Their children who are living at the property are Leah, 17; Esther, 16; Rachel, 14; Wilfred, 10; Eva, 9; Bessie, 7 and 4-year-old Miriam.

Also present at the property, is 44-year-old Sarah Jane Colebrook, servant.

So, where is Moses?  1911, Moses was a student at the Jews College, London.

The next record of Moses is an article published in the Western Mail, in February 1916, A Swansea-Born Rabbi.

This is followed later that year, with his posting as a clergyman of the Jewish troops based at Aldershot.

Information regarding Oses after the First World War goes cold but will return to him shortly.

The census of 1921, Abraham, has yet again moved.  This time the family is living at The Elms, Mount Pleasant.

Abraham, 51 years old, is recorded as a Rag Merchant. His place of birth is now recorded as Poland. Sarah is 50 years old, and her place of birth is recorded as Belarus.

Present at the property are their four children. Rachel, 24 years old; William, 21 is employed as Iron & Metal Merchant. Eva, 20 is employed as a Clerk. Miriam, 14 years old is in full-time education.

Violet Day, an 18-year-old servant is employed by the family as a servant.

Returning to Moses

Moses married Rachel Newman.  The marriage took place in Hackney, London, in April 1923.

1936, Moses is recorded as living in Australia.

By the 1939 Register, the couple were living Hygga Farm, Llanishen, Chepstow, Monmouthshire.  Moses’ occupation is Minister of Religion.

Following the Second World War, Moses departed England in February 1947 on the Cunard White Star Limited Aquitania embarking to Halifax, Canada.

July 1969 aged 71 years old Moses died in Vancouver and is buried at Schara Tzedeck Cemetery, New Westminster, British Columbia, Canada.
