The first Second World War burial at Danygraig Cemetery, was Robert Henry Allan Harrison aged 60 who came from Hull.

Robert who served with the Naval Auxiliary Personnel (Merchant Navy) ranked as Chief Engineer on board H.M.S. Ely.

H.M.S. Ely arrived at Swansea on the 5th of December 1939, Harrison had been warned by the captain, Thomas Henry Marlow, about going ashore because of the black out.  That was the last time that Harrison had been seen.  Harrison was reported missing 5th of January 1940.

Days later, Harrison's body was recovered by the police underneath the New Cut Bridge.  There was no explanation could be offered on how Harrison had fallen in the river.

Following an inquest, the coroner David Clarke recorded the verdict “Found Drowned”.   Thomas Henry Marlow gave evidence along with Thomas John Phillips, Eaton Crescent, who had found Harrison’s body in the water.

Robert Henry Allan Harrison who had been living with his married sister, Mrs. J. E. Comline, who arranged his funeral at Danygraig Cemetery.
