I would like to thank a volunteer for providing this photo of Private Ernest Edward Adley's headstone on the Findagrave website.

Ernest was born in 1892, in Kent, England. The son of Edward William Adley and Mary Jane Lawrence, who were married in 1879 in Kent.

By the time of the 1901 Census, the Adley family were residing at the Forge House, Canterbury.

Edward, who was 44 was a Blacksmith.  Mary, 43, and their two children, Edith M., 11, and Ernest E., 9.

By the time of the 1911 Census. Edward, 55, is still employed as a Blacksmith, and Mary, 54, are both still living in Canterbury.

Both Edith and Ernest have moved away.

Edith, 21, is employed as an Assistant in Drapers, located at the High Street, Tonbridge.

Whilst, Ernest, has moved to Swansea.

Now residing as a boarder Dowlais House, 21 Trafalgar Terrace, Ernest is now 19 and is employed as an Engraver (General).

November 1915, Ernest married Mary May Fender, at St. James Church.

Two years later, they were to have a son, John. This same year, Ernest was to enlist, and he served with the Welsh Guards, 1st Battalion.

Ernest was sent over to France, where he was to lose his life on the 6th of November 1918, and was buried at Meubeuge-Centre Cemetery.

Sadly, less than two years later, Mary died, and she is buried at St. Peter church, Cockett. 

At the time of the 1939 Register, John, was living at 2 Lon Draenen, and his occupation was recorded as a Van Driver.
