Edward John Lewis - FV Cardigan Castle

FV Cardigan Castle 

 The FV Cardigan Castle was built in 1918 for the Ship built for the British Admiralty and named HMT Denis Casey and sold to the private sector after the First World War.

14th February 1926: Cardigan Castle based in Swansea, struck a rock in Clifden Bay in a gale and sank. All but one crew member, boatswain Henry Batchelor and the captain's dog Fally perished.

Two men from Swansea, Edward John Lewis and his father, Thomas J. were casualties.  Edward’s body was washed up near Roonagh pier, Clew Bay on the evening of the 17th of February.

Edward was buried at Bethel Cemetery on the 25th of February, and the South Wales Daily Post, reported the funeral

Edward was living at 55 Cambridge Street, at the time of the 1921 Census, with his mother.

Sarah, who was 43, undertook the home duties of the home.  Edward, 20 years was employed by Walters A. Johns G.B.C., Morriston.  The younger children at the property were Margaret M., 12; Harold J., 7, and 5-year-old Doris D.
