Arthur Michael, who died on April 9th, 1915, is the second military burial at Oystermouth Cemetery.

Arthur, who was born in 1889, Oystermouth, was the son of Thomas Michael and Anne Rees.  They were married at St. James' church on the 12th of October 1873.

According to the 1891 Census, the Michael family was residing at Hill Street.

Thomas, aged 42, was employed as a Mariner, while Anne, aged 38, was born in Llanelly, Carmarthenshire.  Their children were

Oscar, aged 15, is employed as a Mason's Apprentice; George, aged 13, is employed as a General Labourer. Ernest, aged 10, Henry, aged 7, and Thomas, aged 4, all attend school. Arthur is aged 2, and Clifton is aged 6 months.

The 1901 Census recorded the property number for the first time; the Michael family was living at 3 Hill Street.

Thomas, aged 53, was employed as a Mariner, while Anne, aged 47, managed the household. Several of their children had moved out, but some remained at the family home, who were

Oscar, aged 26, is employed as a Mason Journeyman. Henry J., aged 17, holds the position of Page Boy Domestic. Arthur, aged 14, works as an Errand Boy for the Butchers. Thomas, aged 12, and Clifton, aged 10.

By the time of the 1911 Census, several children had moved out of the family home at 3 Hill Street.

Arthur, as the eldest son, still lived at home.

Thomas, aged 63, was a Fisherman, whilst Ann was aged 57.

Arthur, 24 years old, and Thomas John, 22 years old, were both employed as Bridge Painters by the Railway Company. Clifton, 20 years old, was employed as a Signalman by the Harbour Trust Company.

At the outbreak of the First World War, Arthur enlisted with the Royal Irish Regiment. Whilst he was training in Ireland, he contracted spotter fever, from which he died at Longfor Workhouse.

His body was conveyed back home to Mumbles, where he was buried at Oystermouth Cemetery, his funeral being a semi-military service.  His funeral was reported in the South Wales Daily Post.
