Hywel John Clement

 The 1/5th Battalion of the Welsh Regiment landed on Sword Beach on D-Day, 6th June 1944. Among the soldiers who landed at Sword Beach was Lance Corporal Hywel John Clement. 

Hywel, born in 1920, was the only son of John Clements and Sophia Simons, who married in 1901.  John Clements was a well-known musician

As recorded in the 1921 Census, the Clement family was living at 8 Garden Village, Fforestfach.

John, aged 44, was a music teacher, and Sophie, aged 42, managed household responsibilities. Their children were

Winifred, aged 18, is employed as a Tailoress Presser. Irene, aged 16, is employed as a Tailoress. Sarah Jane, aged 12, Megan, aged 10, and Moira, aged 7, all attend school. Hywel John, aged 1 year.

According to the 1939 Register, the Clement family resided at 15 Llwyn Dew. Hywel John, aged 19, was employed as a Motor and Steam Lorry Driver.

Hywel sustained injuries during the D-Day operation and was subsequently transported to a hospital in Liverpool.  Hywel passed away here on 14th August 1944 at the age of 24.

The headstone inscriptions bear the personal inscription WHO DIED AT LIVERPOOL OF WOUNDS RECEIVED IN NORMANDY IN D DAY INVASION
