John Edgar Rees

 September 1868, James Rees, Master Mariner married Elizabeth Annie Hinckley.  The marriage took place at St. James church.

John Edgar Rees was born in 1877. 

The 1881 Census, the Rees family were resident at 54 Mansel Street.  James was absent from the census.

Eliza, aged 34.  Her children present were

Annie M., aged 10; John E., aged4, who both attended school, and Frederick B., aged 1.

Also present were Eliza Hinckley, aged 75, who was Eliza’s mother.

Jane F. Hinckley, aged 45, who was Eliza’s sister-in-law, who was a widowed, and her daughter, Alice E., aged 19.

Lodger John Smyth, aged 56, was also lived at the property.  His occupation is recorded as Board of Trade.

At the time of the 1891 Census, James had returned.  The family were living at 54 Mansel Street.

James, aged 53, is employed as Master Mariner and Eliza, aged 59.  Their children are

Annie, aged 20; John E., aged 14; Frederick B., aged 11; and James R., H., aged 5.

Also present are Alice E., aged 29, niece.

Lodgers William H. Towers, aged 29, who is employed as Ship Broken Agent, and George A. Hepburn, aged 222.  Sister Chrstiana Jameson, aged 21.

Aged 24, John at the time of the 1901 Census, severed with the Royal Engineers was ranked as a Sapper, was living at the Brompton Barracks.

John saw action at the South African Campaign,

In 1915 John enlisted and, he served with the 1st Rhodesian Regiment, seeing action at the German South West Africa.

Short Service

John’s Short Service records indicated that his home address was Oakhurst Bingstead Road, Sutton, Surrey.  His next of kin was his moth Elizabeth Rees, who home address was 11 Langland Road.

John, by the time of July 1916, was ranked a Lance Corporal and served with the King’s Royal Rifle Corps, 2nd Battalion.  He lost his life on the 1st July 1916.

John’s body was not identified, and his name is commemorated on the Arras Memorial.
