Evan Randolph Rees Lewis Bishop

 Robert John Bishop and Alice Allen Lewis were married in 1880 at the Parish church, Llanddewi Velfrey, Pembrokeshire.

The 1881 Census indicates that John and Alice resided at Barnards Hill, Haycastle, Pembrokeshire. John, aged 22, was engaged in farming 200 acres, with his place of birth noted as Oxfordshire. Alice, aged 25, is recorded to have been born in Narberth, Pembrokeshire. They had a daughter named Laura L., who was six months old at the time.

Also present are five servants: Ellen Jones, aged 17; Ada Isaacs, aged 22; John Lewis, aged 44; William Thomas, aged 43; and Daniel Lewis, aged 18.

Over the subsequent decade, the family expanded and relocated to Swansea by the time of the 1891 Census. Their residence at this period was 66 St. Helens Road.

Robert, 32 years old, is currently working as an Insurance Agent, and Alice is 34 years old. Their children are

Louisa L., aged 10; John R. L., aged 9; Frank P. L., aged 8; Alice G. L., aged 7; and Evan R. R. L., aged 5, are all school attendees. The youngest child is Maud J, aged 2.  Evan’s place of birth is recorded as Llangolman, Pembrokeshire.

Elizabeth Matthias, a 58-year-old widowed dressmaker, and Mary Grey, an 18-year-old servant, were also present at the property during the night of the census.

That December, Alice died, and she was buried at Danygraig Cemetery.

Robert married for the second time in 1892, in Swansea, to Mary Jane Green.

According to the 1901 census, the Bishop family had relocated to a new residence at 7 Baptist Row, Ferndale, Christchurch, Rhondda.

Robert, aged 40, is now employed as a Surface Colliery Labourer, while Mary is aged 31.  Her place of birth is recorded as Waterford, Ireland.  The children present are

Evan R. L., aged 16, is employed as a coal mason boy; Maria J., aged 12; Mary W., aged 3; and William Michael, aged 8 months.

By the time of the 1911 Census, Robert and his family had relocated once more and were residing at 22 Shelley Crescent, Swansea.

Robert, aged 52, is now employed as a Dock Labourer, while Mary is aged 43.  Their children are

Mary, aged 13; William, aged 10; Catherine, aged 8, who all attend school. The younger children are Joseph, aged 6, and Elias, aged 3.

According to the most recent census available from 1921, Robert and his family have relocated and are now residing at 10 Emma Street, Swansea.

Robert, aged 65, is now employed as a Transport Worker at the Swansea Docks, while Mary is aged 50.  The ‘children’ present are

Robert J., aged 39, is currently unemployed and previously worked as a labourer; William M., aged 20, works as a phosphate worker at the Marine Works; Catherine A., aged 18, performs household duties; Joseph, aged 16, works as a tin plate worker; Elias J., aged 13, and Gerald, aged 8, attend St Joseph School.

So, what happened to Evan Randolph Rees Lewis Bishop?

Evan emigrated to Canada, arriving in St John, New Brunswick, on 25th April 1909, aboard the Lake Erie. He subsequently relocated to Winnipeg. His occupation is documented as that of a Miner.

Attestation Papers

The Canadian Attestation Papers record that Evan enlisted on February 15, 1915, to serve with the Canadian Infantry, 1st Battalion.

The Ottawa Free Press reported in the editions of June 20th and 29th, 1916, that Evan was wounded, and on June 30th, they reported that Evan had died on the 26th. In all lists, it was noted that Evan came from Wales.

Evan is buried at Boulogne Eastern Cemetery, Boulogne.  His name is also commemorated on the St. Joseph war memorial.
