Birth and Family Background

Alfred Lambert Barnett was born in 1886 in Swansea. There is no surviving record of his father; his mother was Eleanor R. Barnett.

1891 Census

At the time of the 1891 Census, the Barnett family were living at 11 New Oxford Street, Swansea. Eleanor R. Barnett, aged 40, born in Bristol, and recorded as widowed, was employed as a hairdresser. Residing with her were her stepdaughter, Ada M. Wake, aged 15, and her own children: Madeline M. (9), Clara E. (7), Robert W. T. (6), and Alfred L. (6), all of whom were attending school. Also present in the household was a boarder, John Clow, aged 20.

1911 Census

Alfred next appears in the 1911 Census, recorded as a boarder at 5 Greyhound Street, Swansea. The head of the household was Ellenor Jones, a widow aged 52, who was working as a coal merchant. Her household included her son William J., aged 19, a haulier, and his wife May, also 19, as well as David J., aged 15, employed as a newsvendor. Alfred, aged 24, was also working as a haulier at this time.

Mercantile Marine Service and Death

Alfred later served in the Mercantile Marine as a Fireman aboard the S.S. Lorca.

S.S. Lorca
The S.S. Lorca was built by J. Readhead & Sons Ltd., South Shields, in 1910, and at the time of her loss was owned by English & American Shipping Co. Ltd., London. She was a British steamship of 4,129 tons.

On 15th November 1916, Lorca was on a voyage from Gulfport, via Norfolk, to Calais, carrying a cargo of timber, when she was torpedoed and sunk by the German submarine U-49,. The sinking occurred approximately 200 miles west of Ushant. Thirty-two members of the crew were lost.

Alfred Lambert Barnett was among those who lost their lives. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Tower Hill Memorial, London, which honours members of the Merchant Navy who died during the First World War and have no known place of burial.
