Birth and Identity

R. Davies was born in 1883 in Swansea. Despite searches of available records, no official civil or census documentation relating to his life has been identified, and his Christian name remains unknown.

Marriage

It is known that R. Davies married Lucy Davies, who was residing at 81 Robert Hall Street, Salford, Lancashire.

Mercantile Marine Service and Death

S.S. Armadale
During the First World War, R. Davies served with the Mercantile Marine, holding the rank of Storekeeper aboard the S.S. Armadale.

On 27th June 1917, Armadale was torpedoed and sunk by the German submarine U-60 while on a voyage from Manchester to Salonica, carrying troops and military stores. The sinking occurred approximately 160 miles north-west of Tory Island. Eleven members of the crew and passengers were lost.
