Birth and Marriage

William Hugh Cameron was born in 1871 at Kelso, Scotland. Despite searches of available records, few official documents relating to his early life have been identified. He married Jessie Waters in 1902.

Mercantile Marine Service and Death

During the First World War, William served in the Mercantile Marine, holding the rank of Chief Engineer aboard the S.S. Hollington.

The S.S. Hollington was built by Northumberland Shipbuilding Company Ltd., Newcastle, in 1912, and at the time of her loss was owned by F. S. Holland, London. She was a British steamship of 4,221 tons.

On 3rd June 1917, Hollington was on a voyage from Liverpool to the White Sea, travelling in ballast, when she was torpedoed and sunk by the German submarine U-95. The sinking occurred approximately 14 miles south of the Faroe Islands. Thirty members of the crew were lost.

William Hugh Cameron was among those who lost their lives. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Tower Hill Memorial, London, which honours members of the Merchant Navy who died during the First World War and have no known place of burial.
