Birth
Thomas Jones was born in 1847 in Swansea.
Mercantile Marine Service and Death
During the First World War, Thomas served with the Mercantile
Marine, holding the rank of Able Seaman aboard the S.S. Rosario.
The S.S. Rosario was a 1,821 gross
registered ton steam cargo ship, completed in 1900 by Blyth
Shipbuilding Company Ltd. for Orders & Handford Steamship Company
Ltd., and managed by Orders & Handford.
On 19th August 1917, Rosario was torpedoed
and sunk by the German submarine UC-55 while south-west of Ireland.
At the time of her loss, she was on a voyage from Huelva to Troon,
carrying a cargo of ore.

Thomas Jones was among those who lost their lives. He
has no known grave and is commemorated on the Tower Hill Memorial,
London, which honours members of the Merchant Navy who died during the
First World War and have no known place of burial.
