The Nekrews family grave in Danygraig Cemetery commemorates the name of Private David Nekrews, who was killed in action on the 5th of February 1916.

David was born in 1895 and was the son of Henry Nekrews and Mary Jones.

According to the 1901 Census, the Nekrews family resided at 25 Ysgol Street, St. Thomas.

1901 Census

Henry, aged 41, was employed as a General Labourer, while Mary was 38 years old. Their children included:

Jane was 14 years old; Albert was 11 years old; Ada was 9 years old; Maggie was 7 years old; David was 5 years old; Jessie was 4 years old; Henry was 3 years old; and Bessie was less than one month old.

A decade later, at the time of the 1911 Census, the Nekrews family had moved to 5 Wern Terrace.

Henry, aged 53, worked as a labourer, while Mary was 47 years old. Their children included:

Jane was 24 years old; Philip was 21 years old, who was employed as a Furnace Man; David was 16 years old, who was employed as Tin Worker; Jessie was 15 years old; Henry was 13 years old; Irene was 9 years old; Jack was 7 years old, and Ernest was 5 years old.  The census records that two children have died.

David served with the Royal Welsh Fusiliers during the First World War, and was killed on the 5th of February 1916, and is buried at Cambrin Churchyard Extension.
