Private John Malcolm James had recently joined the 6th
Battalion, Welsh Regiment, and unfortunately fell ill; he succumbed to
pneumonia on 17th February 1915.

John was born on the 21st of June 1889, the
youngest child of George James and Sarah Ann Maria James. His parents were
married in Laleston, Glamorgan, in 1882. George, whose place of birth was
Spittal, Pembrokeshire, was the son of John James, and Sarah, whose place of
birth was New Milford, Pembrokeshire, was the daughter of David James.
In the 1891 Census, the James family was recorded living at
34 Norfolk Street, Swansea.

George, 34, worked as a Grocers’ Clerk, while Sarah, 33, managed the household. Their children were.
Morgan Tuberville, 8; Alexander Stuart, 5; and Letitia
Fanny, 4, all attended school. John Malcolm, who was 1 year old.
In the 1901 Census, the James family was recorded living at
60 Cromwell Street, Swansea.

George, 44, worked as a Commercial Traveller (Grocer), while
Sarah, 43, managed the household. Their children were.
Morgan T., 14, worked as a Solicitors Clerk; Alexander S.,

John Malcolm's Merchant Navy apprenticeship began in 1906, which
would have lasted four years. He served his apprenticeship with S. Goldberg
& Sons, as shown by the "Apprentices Indentured in the Merchant
Navy, 1824-1910". John’s apprentice was cancelled in May 1909.

George, 54, worked as a Commercial Traveller Grocer, while
Sarah, 53, managed the household. Their children were.
Morgan Tuberville, 28, worked as a Builder’s Clerk; Letitia
F., 24; and John Malcolm, 21, whose occupation was recorded as a Merchant
Seaman.
Alexander Stuart James, at the time of the 1911 Census, had
moved to 1 Glaspyn Terrace, Houset Fach, Gowerton.
Alexander, 25, worked as a Cabinet Maker, while Anne, 22,
managed the household.

John Malcolm James enlisted in the Welsh Regiment, 1/6th
Battalion. He passed away on 17th February 1915, and his parents' residence was
recorded as Ogmore, West Cross. According to the “UK, Army Registers of
Soldiers’ Effects, 1901-1929”, a sum of £1 11s 9d was owed to John at the
time of his death, which was subsequently paid to his father.
