On March 3, 1916, the H.M. Drifter Boy Harold hit a mine off Brindisi, Italy, mines which were laid by UC12. All crew members perished.

Thomas was born in 1893 to Devon-born Thomas Copp and Somerset-born Florence Lavis. Florence had previously married Arthur James Hodges in 1883, and after his death, she married Thomas Copp in 1892 at Shepton Mallet.

Shepton Mallet was where Thomas was born.

During the 1901 Census, the Copp family resided at 23 Pentreguiena Road, St. Thomas.

Thomas, aged 33, was employed as a Plate Layer for the Harbour Trust. Florence was 35 years of age. Their children were:

Thomas C., aged 8; George W., aged 6; John A., aged 4; and Leonard L., aged 1.

Also present was Thomas's 15-year-old stepdaughter, Elanora Hodges.

The family had moved by the time of the 1911 Census to 15 Bevans Road, Port Tennant.

Thomas, aged 43, was still employed as a Plate Layer for the Harbour Trust. Florence was 44 years of age. Their children were:

Thomas C., aged 18, was employed as a fireman at the Swansea Docks. George W., aged 16, was a worker at the Swansea Docks. John A., aged 14, was employed as a fireman at the Tin Works. Leonard L., aged 11, was a student attending school, while Matilda Irene, aged 8.

Also present was General Worker Henry, 56, Thomas's widowed brother.

Thomas enlisted in the Royal Naval Reserve on the 23rd of September, 1915.

After the sinking of the H.M. Drifter Boy Harold, the Herald of Wales published an article "A Family's Record" concerning Thomas. The article also referenced his brothers and cousins, all of whom were serving in the military.
