South Wales Daily Post
The South Wales Daily Post published an article in August 1944 titled “Port Tennant Man in Dispatches." Mrs. J. Powell received a certificate from the Admiralty awarded to her eldest son, Acting Leading Seaman George Joseph. The certificate was granted "for his courage in the face of the enemy and for setting an example of whole-hearted devotion for duty, which upheld the high tradition of the Royal Navy."  

George had been killed in action a few months earlier, when his ship, H.M.S. Asphodel, was torpedoed

H.M.S. Asphodel 
H.M.S. Asphodel was a Flower-class corvette that served in the Royal Navy. It was constructed by George Brown and Company in 1940, commissioned that same year, and consequently sunk by U-575 on 10th of March 1944.

H.M.S. Asphodel was escorting convoy SL 150 along with MKS-41 near Cape Finisterre. The German submarine U-575 launched a torpedo that hit the Asphodel and then escaped. H.M.S. Clover rescued five sailors from Asphodel, while 92 others were lost with the ship.
