On October 30th, 1916, the British steel barque TRIDONIA, on voyage from Dublin to Buenos Aires in ballast, was wrecked on Oxwich Point. TRIDONIA dragged her anchors, hit the rocks and sank in deeper water. 3 crew were lost. Note: Tridonia was the German ship Heinz, seized at the outbreak of WWI by the armed merchant cruiser Kinfaus Castle, off Port Nolloth. Before that she was known as the French Jean-Bart, which ran aground in Australia. Swansea, 31 October: A message from the agent of the barque TRIDONIA, of Porteynon, received at 3.30 states that all the crew were landed except the master, chief officer, and one able seaman, who have been lost. Fully expect ship will go to pieces shortly. [Liverpool Daily Post 2.11.1916] The body of the captain of the Cardiff-owned barque TRIDONIA, which was wrecked in a gale on Tuesday, has been identified as that of Captain Stewart, of Aberdeen. During the gale the TRIDONIA, which had a crew of nearly 30 hands, was swept on the rocks at Oxwich Point and the Mumbles, and the Tenby lifeboats made heroic but unavailing efforts to reach her. For nearly 30 hours the captain who was accompanied by his wife, and all his men were on deck, many lashed to the rigging. Three rocket brigades from various stations on the Gower coast worked from the cliffs with their lines for 24 hours trying to establish communication with the battered ship, and at last succeeded. Mrs Stewart, the captain's wife, was the first brought ashore. She was in a state of collapse after her ordeal, and is now under treatment in Gower. The captain, second officer Rock, and an able seaman, Patrick Russell (of Dublin) were swept off the ship and drowned. Captain Stewart resided at 41 Duthie Terrace, Aberdeen. [Aberdeen Journal 4.11.1916] The story of how Captain Stewart, of Aberdeen, mater of the Cardiff barque TRIDONIA, met his death on the Gower coast at Oxwith, and the bravery of the skipper's wife, who was with him on the ill-fated vessel, forms an epic of the sea. The TRIDONIA was on a voyage from Dublin to Buenos Ayres, and, in a raging sea, she struck and became a total wreck, three out of the 23 souls aboard her being lost. At Mumbles, where the first intimation of the disaster was received, the lifeboat put to sea, but so high were the breakers and so severe the wind-storm, that it was found impossible to bear down upon the doomed ship. Meanwhile the rocket apparatus had been taken overland from Port Eynon to the scene of the wreck, where it was known the men were clinging to the rigging, and had been for many hours facing what seemed to their end at any moment. The Tenby lifeboat was able to approach within a few hundred yards of the spot, and at this time could see no sign of life on board, so that it was concluded that the crew of the barque, save four who had got ashore in the ship's boat shortly after she struck, had all been drowned. Happily, this was not so, and eventually the supreme efforts of the rocket apparatus men were successful, and the crew were all brought ashore except the master, second mate, and an able seaman who had been washed overboard during Monday night.
